Turn cooking mode on
Step 1
In a small bowl, heat the water to 110°F (43°C), using a kitchen thermometer for accuracy. Once it is at the correct temperature, add the sugar and yeast to the water. Give this a gentle stir or shake, just to get the majority of the yeast wet. Let sit for 10 minutes, or until the yeast is active and foamy.

Do you have to use the ice cubes when baking? Is there an alternative method to just throwing them on the bottom?

The ice cubes are optional to help it give it a softer crust. You could also just add a small pan or bowl of water to the oven as well. It is just to create steam:)
